Leaves are alternate, ovate, entire, chartaceous, with an apiculate tip bright green and lustrous above, glaucescent beneath.

Flowers open in March to April before the leaves.

This species is very common on mesic sites in the cool or warm temperate zone.

The wood is used for sticks, snow shoes, fuels, kindling woods.
