Acer argutum

A deciduos small tree with greyish brown smooth bark.

Leaves are opposite, palmately 5-7 lobed, cordate at the base, incisely and duplicately serrulate, deeply green and glabrous above, paler and white pubescent on the nerves beneath.

Petioles are 3-10 cm long, often reddish, glabrous, grooved above.

Flowering in May to June with leaves.

Samaras riping in September to October.

This maple is found in deep mountain of central and western Honshu and Shikoku, favoring sunny moist places as along mountain streams.

The wood is used for utensils, musical instruments, fuels. It is planted for garden trees.
