A large evergreen tree. The bark is greyish brown, smooth, mottled with reddish yellow scars.

Leaves are alternate, coriaceous, acute at the apex.

White flowers open densely in September to October on hornotinous branchlets.

This tolerant tree grows on valleys near sea in the subtropical to warm temperate zone.

The wood is used for utensils, fuels. The leaf are used for medicine.

Distribution ; Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Ryukyu, Formosa
