A deciduous shrub with dark greyish brown bark.

Leaves are alternate, membranous, oblique, ovate to broadly ovate, acute with a bristle-like tip at the apex, obliquely cordate at the base, siuate-dentate with bristle-like teeth.

Flowers in March to April, before the leaves.

Capsules ripening in October.

This winter hazed is confined to a rather small area covering several prefectures on the Japan-Sea side of central Honshu, and especially gregarious in serpentine region.

It is planted for garden tree.

Distribution ; Honshu (Gifu, Ishikawa, Fukui, Kyoto, Hyogo)
