A large deciduous tree with dark grey bark.

Leaves are alternate, crenate, glaucescent with silky hairs beneath.

Flowers in April to May with the leaves, monoecious.

It is found on downslope and along streams referring wettish soils, but scarcely found on the Japan Sea area.

The wood is used for furnitures, utensils, sleepers, paper pulp, fuels

Distibution ; Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu
