A deciduous small tree with greyish brown bark. The bark is prominent with numerous small lenticles and dark brown scars of pickles.

Leaves are alternate, thick, odd-pinnate.

The tree is widely found in the warm to subtropical temperate zone. It is typical intolerant tree and common in the secondary forests.

The wood is used for boxes, clogs, toys.

Distribution ; Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Ryukyu, Formosa, South Korea, China
