It grows on sunny wettish places in the cool temperate regions.

The wood is used for utensiles, furnitures, buildings. The bark is used for medicines and yellow dye.

Distribution ; Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Korea, Manchuria, Saghalien, Southern Kuriles, China
