Leaves are opposite, oval, entire on the margin.

In June to July, 2 yellowish white flowers open in the axils of leaves.

Fruits ripen to black, edible. In Hokkaido they are called Hasukappu.

The wood is used for utensils, seals. The leaves are used as a tonic in Chinese medicine.

Distribution ; Hokkaido, Honshu (North, Middle area), Kurile, Korea.
