A large deciduous tree with greyish brown smooth bark.

Leaves are opposie, trifoliolate.

Petioles are hirsute, sulcale above, dilated at the base.

This species is endemic to the cool temperate zone and prefers moist and fertile sites near streams.

The wood is used for buildings, utensils, fuels. From the bark people produce eye medicine and healthy tea.

Distribution ; Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu
