A deciduous shrub with brownish grey corky bark.

Leaves are opposite, odd pinnate. Leaflets are broadly elliptic, acuminate at the apex, serrulate on the margin.

Numerous small white flowers open on new shoots after leaves in April to May.

This tree is common in the warm to cool temperate zone.

It is planted for garden tree. The shoots and flowers are used for medicine.

The pith of the shoots are used for the botanical experiment.

Distribution ; Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Korea, China
