A deciduous shrub with greyish bark.

Leaves are decussately opposite, elliptic, abruptly acute at the apex, rounded at the base, entire and ciliated on the margin.

White flowers open in pairs in May. Berries ripen to red in July although they are poisonous.

This is a rare tree in the cool temperate mountains.

It is planted for garden trees.
