A medium sized deciduous tree with pale brown corky fissured bark.

Leaves are alternate, elliptic to obovate oblong, abruptly acute at the apex, serrulate with bristly teeth terminated with glands, whitish with dense stellate hairs beneath.

White flowers open on short lateral shoots from annotinous shoots in June to July.

This tree is widely found on sunny and mesic site along streams in the cool temperate zone.

The wood is used for match sticks, chop sticks. It is planted for garden trees.

Distribution ; Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, China
