An evergreen shrub with grey brown bark.

Leaves are alternate, thick coriaceous, entire on the margin, densely with pale brown tomentum beneath.

Beautiful rose colored flowers open in May to June.

This tree is distributed in the subalpine zone and the upper part of the warm temperate zone.

It is called Azumashakunage.

The wood is used for utensils, seals. The leaves are used as a tonic in Chinese medicine.
