A large evergreen tree with blackish grey deeply fissured bark.

Leaves are alternate, distichous, serrate, coated with greyish brown scales beneath.

Flowers in May to June with scent.

This is the most representative tree in the warm temperate forests.

The wood is used for buildings, sleepers, fuels.

Distribution ; Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Ryukyu, Korea
