A small evergreen tree with dark grey bark.

Leaves are alternate, crenately serrate on the upper margin.

This species is dominant tree at rocky places near coast.

People collects cork from relative species Quercus Suber.

The wood is highly prized for making hard charcoal. Also planted for garden tree.

Distribution ; Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Ryukyu, China
