Leaves are opposite, thick herbaceous. Petioles are 2-5 cm long, grooved above.

The species is widely found in the cool to warm temperate zone.

It is also called Unohana.

The wood is used for wooden pegs. It is planted in hedges and around fields.

Distribution ; Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, China
