A large deciduous tree with pale greyish brown smooth bark.

Leaves are decussately opposite, odd-pinnately compound.

Leaflets are broadly lanceolate, caudately acuminate at the apex, shallowly toothed.

Flowers open in April to May with the leaves.

It is found widely but scatteredly in the cool to warm temperate zone.

The wood is used for utensils, machinaries, sporting goods, fuels.

Distribution ; Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu
