A large deciduous tree with dark grey smooth bark.

Leaves are decussately opposite, entired, 5 lobed, lustrous green above, paler beneath.

Petioles are very long as long as leaf and glabrous.

This species is found in the cool temperate zone, restricted to Japan seaside, prefering firtile places along the rivers.

The wood is used for utensils, furnitures, instruments, buildings, ski, turneries. Maple sugar is yielded from the sap of the tree.
