A medium sized deciduous tree with greyish brown smooth bark.

Leaves are alternate, large, rounded, without stipules, whitish beneath covered densely with stellate hairs.

White flowers open nearly 20 collected in drooping on new shoots in May to June.

It usually grows in moist woods in the cool temperate zone.

The wood is used for utensiles, turneries, carvings.

Distribution ; Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Korea, Manchuria, China
