Leaves are alternate, rather thick, depressedly obovate-orbicular, abruptly acute at the apex, rounded to subcordate at the base.

Petioles sulcate above, densely pubescent with stellate hairs.

Flowering in JUly to August, solitary in the leaf-axils on new shoots, fading away in a day.

Capsules ovoid, acute at the apex, ripening in September to October.

This tree is endemic to southern Japan, growing along seashores.

The wood is used for small articles, the bark is emphloyed for making ropes.
