Hiiragi
Osmanthus heterophyllus


An evergreen small tree with greyish white smooth bark.

Leaves are decussate opposite, thick coriaceous, spiny pointed.

Numerous small white flowers open in October to November.

It grows in the warm temperate zone, but rare in Western Japan.

The wood is used for utensils, instruments, seals, combs, beads of abacus, fuel.

Distribution ; Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Yaku Island, Ryukyu, Formosa
