Leaves are alternate, biennial, lanceolate, deep green and lustrous above.

Berry like fruits ripen to milky white in November on.

This tree is very common forest floor plants at the mesic site in the warm temperate zone.

It is a good indicator of suitable sites for Sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) afforestation.

Distribution ; Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Ryukyu, Formosa, China, Indo-china
