A deciduous shrub with blackish brown, longitudinally fissured, bark.

Leaves are opposite, 2-4 pairs in a long shoot, obovate-oblong, short-acuminate at the apex, rounded to broadly cuneate, sometimes subcordate at the base, sharply dentate, stellate-hairy on both sides.

Flowers in April to May, in terminal many-flowered corymbose cymes 3-8 cm across on short 2-leaved shoots.

Drupes ripening scarlet in autumn.

This is a common shrub on sunny hills in the warm-temperate zone of Japan.

Drupes are edible and the wood is strong.

Distribution ; Honshu (Fukushima to south), Shikoku, Kyushu, Korea
