A big deciduous tree with blackish gray bark, longitudinally fissured, peeling off in thin scales.

Leaves are decussately opposite, with slender pubescent petioles, dark green and soft pubescent above, paler and thickly soft pubescent beneath, ciliate on the margin.

Flowers in May to June with the leaves.

Fruits maturing in October, with 2-wings, horizontally spreading.

This maple is endemic to northern and central Japan, and it is distributed disjunctively.

The wood is hard and is used for utencils, furnitures and fuels.

Distribution ; Hokkaido, Tohoku district, Central Honshu
