A large deciduous tree with yellowish brown, shallow longitudinal fissured, bark.

Leaves are alternate, oddly pinnate compound with petioles dilated at the base.

Leaflets 3-9 pairs, sessile, doubly serrate.

Flowers in June.

Fruits are riping in October in corn-like catkins.

This tree is not rare in the secondary forests.

The wood is used for constraction wood, utensils, clogs, match-sticks, culturing shiitake.

Distribution ; Honshu(west), Shikoku, Kyushu, South Korea, Formosa, China
