A large deciduous tree with purplish gray thick smooth bark, but shallowly fissured in old.

Leaves are alternate, 2 ranked, oblique cordate at the base, coarsely serrate with mucronate teeth, dark green and sparsely pubescent above, densely tomentose with stellate hairs beneath.

Flowers in June to July, in axillary pendulous.

Fruits, nut-like drupes, ripens in October.

This linden grows in rich soils as along streams.

The wood, light ard yellowish white, is used for building material, boxes, veneer.

Distribution ; Hokkaido, Honshu (north, central)
