Rengetsutsuji
Rhododendron japonicum


A deciduous shrub with greyish brown smooth bark.

Leaves are alternate, herbaceo-chartaceous, oblanceolate, obtuse or rounded at the apex, nearly entire with setae on the margin, vivid green and with appressed-setose hairs above, pale green beneath.

Vermilion orange flowers open in May to June.

It grows on a sunny plateau in the cool temperate zone.

Poisonous flowers are used for pesticide.

Distribution ; Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu
