Clethra barbinervis


A small deciduous tree with reddish brown smooth bark.

Leaves are alternate, gathered toward the top of shoots, herbaceous, sharply serrate, green and glabrous above, paler beneath.

Petioles are flat and sulcate.

white flowers open densely on new shoots in June to July.

It is commonly found at sunny places such as on ridgesin the warm to cool temperate zone.

The wood is used for alcove posts, turneries, utensils. Young leaves are edible.

Distribution ; Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Korea
