Enkianthus campanulatus


A deciduous shrub with greyish smooth bark.

Leaves are alternate, obovate, acute at the apex, serrulate with aristate teeth. In autumn the leaves turn brilliant red.

Campanulate yellowish white flowers open in June to July.

It is found on ridges in the cool temperate zone and the lower part of the subalpine zone.

The wood is used for alcove posts. It is planted for garden trees and bonsai.

Distribution ; Hokkaido, Honshu
