A small evergreen tree with purpish brown smooth bark.

Leaves are alternate, coriaceous, aromatic.

This species is a common sublayer tree in the oak forests and Abies-Tsuga forests.

The wood is used for turneries, marquentries. The leaves are used for making an offering and manufacturing incense powder. The fruits are very poisonous.

Distribution ; Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Ryukyu, Formosa, China
