A moderate-sized evergreen tree with grayish smooth bark.

Leaves are alternate, coriaceous, abruptly acuminate with an obtuse at the apex, gradually narrowed toward the base, glabrescent and lustrous above, silvery with dense lepidote scales beneath.

Flowers in September to Novenber.

Nuts maturing in October of next year.

This tree is found on low hills of western Japan, preferring sunny places.

The wood, hard and heavy, is used for fuels, building materials, various implements.

Distribution ; Central Honshu (Kinki to Chugoku), Shikoku, Kyushu, Formosa, China
