Leaves are opposite, obovate, abruptly acute at the apex, rounded at the base.

White flowers open in May to June. Drupes ripen to red to black.

This tree is widely found on mesic sites along streams in the cool to warm temperate zone.

It is planted for garden trees.

Distribution ; Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Formosa, China
